Masters of the Universe; Completely leans hard into what it is, a goofy, nostalgic space opera medieval fantasy. The stellar cast play their parts with glee & heart, almost giving more than the story deserves. The jokes land and the dramatic touches play well, making for a satisfying silly movie; B

Her; Poses interesting questions about modern relationships, dealing w/divorce & break ups, & how initial attraction morphs into something different as time together passes. All this portrayed by great acting, and a rather myopic view of artificial technology, makes for a thought provoking film; B

Will & Harper

Will & Harper; A testament to friendship between two funny people who navigate how a life changing decision affects the way they interact w/each other & encounter the world together. Hard truths are captured, some of it stark & ugly, but the beauty of true friendship shines through. Heartwarming; B

Despicable Me 4

Despicable Me 4; Comedic voice cast given little to do besides playing 2nd fiddle to slapstick shenanigans of minions, who still land laughs. Story shows how the studio doesn’t know what to do w/Gru anymore, while side characters are an even greater afterthought. A solid, safe summer diversion; C+

Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984; Sad misfire. Serves up minuscule amount of action & modicum of humour when 80s era of excess offered comedic & critical opportunities. A big letdown despite clever casting choices. Character still inspires but is soddened by her obsession with one man; C+

Despicable Me 3

Despicable Me 3; Quick cash grab that stays true to the franchise but fails to surprise. Laughs and gaffs aplenty but little improvement; B-

Ghostbusters; A lot of lines fall flat, but sign me up for any future films w/these ladies. Invoking franchise's name was unnecessary; B

The Martian; Highly entertaining Apollo mission style drama. Laughs, tears, tension. Superb acting & visuals. Moviemaking at its best; A-
